The Tory Leadership have drawn the conclusion that the primary reason for their disappointing election results was support for continuity, the policy of austerity.
At Tory Conference, announcements regarding infrastructure projects, tuition fees, public sector pay and housing were made. They are attempts to park tanks on Labour’s lawn. However, these reforms are minor and represent, at best, are not parking so much ‘tanks’ as Smart cars. Along with these measures is the undying belief that the free market is the only solution to Britain’s problems. Yet the current ills of society are a direct result of the free market.
The economy is ‘booming’ with near full employment. However, this has not been reflected in rising incomes. As sure as night follows day the boom will be followed by bust and living standards will be driven down further.
The Tories are fond of using the current crisis in Venezuela as an example of what life would be like under a Labour Government. Labour should respond to any attempt at economic blackmail by nationalising the major banks, insurance houses and the top 100 companies that dominate the economy. Measures along these lines would act as a beacon for change throughout the globe.
