When I realised how serious climate change was, I floated the ‘Doctor Strangelove’ perspective: that billionaires were booking places in deep mine shafts, with specially chosen young women to do household tasks and, when it was safe, to repopulate the Earth. But I was looking in the wrong direction!
I saw an article in the ‘i’ newspaper about experiments taking place to see whether life can not only survive in space, but if life can be created by IVF! It is obvious the billionaires will already be looking at advance bookings! They’ve wrecked the Earth and now want an escape route.
I’m sure I heard that instead of the danger of a 1.5oC rise in temperature since the Industrial Revolution, the Earth is heading for at least a 2oC rise. We can already see dramatic swings in the weather, with the hottest year on record in 2022 and a statistically significant distribution of hot years in the last twenty.
We know only one solution: the socialist change of the world; ending the use of fossil fuels, replacing gas-guzzlers with electric cars, producing power from renewable sources like geothermal, tidal, solar and wind and ridding the world of the profit motive. We also need to try to replace what we’ve destroyed by a programme of re-forestation.
I used to say the future was either socialism or fascism/war, but we can add a third possibility: self-destruction due to greed. While billionaires escape to space!
