Letter from Mike, a recent migrant to Canada
Mike was a Unite shop steward who recently moved to Canada and here he gives his thoughts on Canadian politics and unions.
Unions are good here too and membership is rising, as it should. Non-union members are just the same here as UK – getting a free ride. It is very weird here how the politics is run. Each province had its own rules and the Prime Minister has no power to override provincial laws. It’s bonkers!
On political parties, we have the PCP (Progressive Conservative Party), who are conservatives but are now far right, like Johnson’s cabal. Then there are the Liberal Party, which is watered down Tories, and the NDP (New Democratic Party) which mirrors the UK Labour party.
The rulers make sure they never get power. But they are strong brokers for change, and they do enough in elections to have a say and put on pressure to get socialist things in place – like free dental care, more prescription drugs, and so on. I wish they would get in power. They got in once and everybody benefitted.
But I have to say that the USA takes first place for the most braindead political system in the West, by far, but we have the same tendencies here in Canada. In Ontario, we have Doug Ford – who is a Canadian Trump. He stole $4.1bn, and nothing done. He starved education, welfare, healthcare funds, etc.
He needs booting out. He only got in because of voter apathy – a big mistake. His method is gaslighting and supporting the ‘freedumb’ lunatics, etc. It’s pure Trumpism. Beyond that, we have Poillievre, who is a very dangerous far right nut-job. If he gets in then…holy fack.
People have had enough. We have Canadian MAGAs who are dumb like the UK gammons. They all need to be re-educated. It’s just pure frustration.
Jagmeet Singh of the NDP speaks his mind and wants more socialist values. And gets he things done – he holds influence over Trudeau. We also have first nation politics, too. They are fervent for change and inclusion. There have been strikes here too and rightly so. Up the workers!
